TEACHERS’ UNION ABANDONED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Jan. 7. At the Teachers’ Institute conference this morning, the discussion on the question of a union for teachers was resumed. The first half of the remit, -that the time was opportune for the formation of a union of teachers, was lost. The second portion of the remit was withdrawn. Mr. Harrison (Auckland) moved that the executive request the Minister of Education to set up a committee of six, three to be elected by the institute and three by the department, with the Minister as chairman, for the purpose of reviewing all deliverances of the department and all requests of the institute before final adoption, The remit was lost on the voices, FIRE AT TE KUITI. .( To Kuiti; Jan. 7. The biggest fire in Te Kuiti for ovet six years occurred at 2 a.m., when a 10-roomed boarding-house, owned and occupied by J. Cowper, was burned to the ground. The occupants escaped in their night attire. Nothing was saved.
