BANKRUPTCY RETURNS. By Telegraph.—Press Association Dunedin, Jan. 5. In this district the bankruptcies during the year were seven. The assets realised £2386 and the dividends £2549. The corresponding figures were ten, £1784 and £1230. In rhe rest of Otago and Southland, inclituihg Invercargill, Gore and Oamaru, there were ten bankruptcies; the assets realised £1719 and the dividends £lB-39. In the previous year the figures were eleven, £1271 and £OBO. CHILDREN AND PICTURES. Wellington, Jan. 5. Moving pictures their effect upon children were discussed at a meeting of the Educational Institute to-day. Mr. F. A. Garry stated that a special committee had gone into the question very thoroughly and had presented a report with recommendations which were published recently. The committee’s recommendations were adopted, with one or two minor amendments. MAORIS ATTACK PUBLICAN. Gisborne, aJn. 5. A riotous affray is reported from Ruatorea, on the East Coast. A party of from twenty to thirty Maoris at 1 a.m. on New Year’s Day rode up to the hotel and to stone the building. The licensee, Raynham, remonstrated with the hooligans, who attacked him. He was borne down by weight of numbers and was freely kicked and struck by the rioters. Finally, he managed to struggle back to shelter, whereupon the Natives galloped away. Raynham was badly knocked about, receiving- cuts and bruises about the face, hands and body. BOOKMAKERS FINED. Dunedin, Jan. 5. Tn the police court James Arthur Frost and Thomas Potter pleaded guilty to charges of carrying on business as bookmakers on January 1 and other dates.. Chief Detective Bishop explained that the accused were arrested on New Year’s I|ay. They entered bookmaking about a year ago and had been betting on a small scalp. When arrested both admitted ’the offence and they had now given an assurance that they would not offend in the future. This was the first prosecution under the new Act. Each of the accused was fined. £lOO.
