NEXT WAR.
TWENTY YEARS HENCE. WOULD DESTROY CIVILISATION. COUNCIL OF NATIONS NECESSARY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received Jan. 5, 7.30 p.m. London, Jan. 4. Viscount Grey, acknowledging the freedom of Glasgow, said that if another war broke out twenty years hence it would destroy European civilisation. To avoid this, he said, there must be no secret treaties, and we must maintain the closest possible relations between our late allies, especially France and Italy. Nothing could be said about the United States, for we were awaiting a declaration of policy by the new President, but it was absolutely necessary to keep some council of nations together. When one nation begaft to force the pace in the competition in armaments, let the council of nations prevent the competition growing. It was in the beginning of sueh things that the most effective action could be taken. —Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.
