PERSONAL.
The Prime Minister has returned to Wellington from Auckland. He expects to be back in Auckland before the end of January to look into matters of Departmental business.
Mr. J. P. Luke, M.P. for ‘Wellington North, accompanied by Mrs. Luke and their son and daughter, left yesterday after having spent a brief holiday in New Plymouth.
The 1 Manchester Guardian understands that Mr. Walter H. Long, First Lord of the Admiralty, is resigning owing to a lengthy and painful illness. Sir L. Worthington Evans is likely to suece>- him.—Press Cable. 1
Miss Walker, who for some time has occupied the position of assistant at the Whenuakura School, has resigned her position in order to join a school nearer to her home in North Taranaki. Prior to leaving, Miss Walker was presented by the scholars with a handsome gold-mounted fountain pen as a mark of the affection and esteem felt for her by the pupils. Mr. A. Garvey, formerly of the firm of Dansey’and Gavey, and assistant to Sir Arnold Gridley, has been appointed electrical engineer in charge of the Lake Coleridge scheme, and took up his duties early in Deceipber. Mr. Gavey has been connected with big electrical installations in Chile and South Africa. At present Mr. Gavey is on a visit to Auckland.
Mr. George Burgess, a well known member of the Stratford Forresters’ Lodge, has found it necessary -to leave Stratford for health reasons, and will take up his residence in New Plymouth about the end of the month (writes our Stratford correspondent). He has been in Stratford for about thirty years, and with his father took a leading part in the formation of the first brass band ni the town, about 4he year 1892. He has always been an active worker in all Friendly Society mutters.
The death is announced from Christchurch of Mr. George Barrell, a resident of that city for nearly half a century For many years the late Mr. Barrell was a member of the West Christchurch District High School Committee, and took an active interest in the welfare of the school. He was also an enthusiastic member of the Veterans’ Cricket Club until last year. The deceased gentleman was an old member of the Durham Street Methodist Church, and one of its chief officers for many years, representing it at conference on fnany occasions.. \
