A speaker at’a public meeting, held at Balclutha to consider the question of establishing woollen mills at the town, said that of the eleven mills at present operating in New Zealand two could be classed as very small, six were of medium size, and two might be regarded as very large. Four of these were public companies, paying from 10 per cent, to 13 per cent, on their capital and 5 per cent, to 6 per cent, on the present market value of the shares. That showed how good the proposition was from the point of view of Balclutha. Some of the mills had not been successful at first because thev started on too small a scale, and it was not till they increased their scale that they made progress. He would strongly advise against anything being done unless £50,000 worth of shares had been taken up, and £lOO,OOO worth was in. sight. It would be at least three years before the mill would be in a position to supply the finished article. The meeting affirmed the desirability of establishing the mills and appointed a committee to obtain Cfrther information.
