DURHAM ROAD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The spell of splendid weather, though at times very hot, Is enabling a lot of work to be done in clearing and ploughing ground, and many settlers report good “strikes” of turnips, others are holding back for planting, while others are still busy at stumping. On all sides the appearance of the areas shut up for hay give promise of splendid stacks, and tt is generally hoped that the weather will continue favorable. A lady poultry fancier wants to know if the following does not constitute a record by a. hen of the Brown Leghorn variety, “Pheasant” by name. This hen for five years took a spell of 10 to 12 days during the moulting time, but kept up continuous egg laying for the rest of the period. Warm or cold, wet or fine, “Pheasant” produced the egg. Residents who attended the seaside picnic at Ngamotu on New Year’s Day are quite enthusiastic with the management for the manner in which the affair was conducted.

It has often been said that dairy farmers seem to. have plenty of time to get to races, etc., but if those making such remarks could only see-the scurry.and extra work that the few local sports had to undergo to enable them to take a little time off, well, they’d say they deserved the vacation. I have not heard, as yet, as to whether a special train or such like was wanted to bring home the “takings.” I’iri afraid it’s all work and little return 1 The milk supply to the creamery is keeping up splendidly, and the new arrangements for dealing with the skim milk and whey return are giving the fullest satisfaction all round. The means of obtaining a supply of boiling water for the cans is a great improvement on the old method, and naturally is taken the fullest advantage of. I understand thjt the parents of the school children are intending to give the latter a special trip in the near future. Curd Bros.’ two motor lorries are engaged to convey a large number to the Ngaere Gardens, and a great day is anticipated. RAHOTU. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The local Sunday School picnic was held at the Recreation Ground on Boxing Day, and proved a most enjoyable affair. It was the first picnic of the season to be favored by good weather. Loaded motor lorries of children and parents came from Pungarehu, Oaonui and Opunake. Children, old folk, and young folk all seemed to enjoy themselves very much. Lunch and tea were served on tables at the pavilion near the new bowling green. Races and games by the young people were the order of the day. The usual race-goers went to the races, but we do not seem to hear of any big dividends being obtained. Several local fishermen have been spending hours on the beach, but getting no bites. The last two days have been extremely hot hero. Haymaking among the farmers is 1h full swing just now. Mr. and Mrs. Hopkins, who have been confined to their beds, are up again. Messrs. R. Wright and M. Kidd, of Matangi, Waikato, are spending their holiday here. Mrs. Harrison has her son, Mr. J. Harrison, of Hastings, spending bls holiday at home. Mr. and Mrs. Bell. senr.. are staying with their son, Mr. Bell, in the township.
