LOSS BY FIRE.
CANTERBURY HOME DESTROYED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. ••Keinton Combe,” Waiau, North Canterbury, the residence of Colonel R. H. Chaffey. formerly officer commanding the Canterbury, military district, was destroyed by fire this morning. A fire had been started in the laundry, and it is supposed that while the laundress was temporarily absent sparks ignited wood in the vicinity, and the whole playe was a blazing mass before the outbreak was discovered. Unfortunately the water supply system was located in the laundry, and across to it was cut off by the flames. Shearers and others managed to save, some of the furniture and a nearby cottage. The building, which contained fifteen rooms, was insured in the State Office for £2009, and the furniture in the South British Office for £575.
