FRIAR’S CRIMINAL LOVE.
AN AMAZING STORY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn—Copyrignt. London, Jan. 3. The Milan correspondent of the Chronicle states that there was intense excitement during the five weeks’ trial, which has jus* concluded, of an apostate priest, Friar Viavolino, a leading Franciscan preacher, who was sentenced to 24 years’ imprisonment on a charge of murdering hig superior. A crowded court daily heard amazing stories of the friar’s criminal love affairs, covering 10 years. The ruin of 32 families was atributed to him. Thousands of love letters were read from the accused’s admirers and victims, including a countess with whom he had had a long association.
Excesses in houses of ill-fame and gfmbling culminated in his murdering hi s Superior with an iron bar. Immediately he went to the house of a mistress, donned the woman’s stage clothes and bade all eat, drink and be merry.
The accused admitted that he lost belief in religion fippn after taking vows, but continued for the sake of the fees and facilities for conquests.—Aus.-N.Z, Cable Assn.
