The following was issued to-day by the military authorities of Cork:—“As the result of an ambush of police at Middleton and near Globe House, the military governor decided that seven houses in the vicinity of the outrages should be destroyed, as the authorities were bound to have known of the ambush and attack on military parties. Seven houses in Middleton, Ballyadam and Knockgriffin were destroyed between three and six on the afternoon of January 1. A notice was handed to each occupier as to why the house was to be destroyed. Each resident was given an hour to remove valuables, but not furniture, and the house was then destroyed. Nothing apart from the house and furniture was destroyed.” London, Jan.2. As a sequel to the Middleton ambush, the military and the police raided the town last night, burning the garage of an engineering works and damaging several shops and houses. The military raided the Cork workhouse, arresting a number of Irish volunteers. Several attacks have been made on police patrols at Ballybay, Constable Malone being killed and three constables wounded. One attacker was killed. •’-Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
