The following was issued to-day by the military authorities of Cork:—“As the result of an ambush of police at Middleton and near Globe House, the military governor decided that seven houses in the vicinity of the outrages should be destroyed, as the authorities were bound to have known of the ambush and attack on military parties. Seven houses in Middleton, Ballyadam and Knockgriffin were destroyed between three and six on the afternoon of January 1. A notice was handed to each occupier as to why the house was to be destroyed. Each resident was given an hour to remove valuables, but not furniture, and the house was then destroyed. Nothing apart from the house and furniture was destroyed.” London, Jan.2. As a sequel to the Middleton ambush, the military and the police raided the town last night, burning the garage of an engineering works and damaging several shops and houses. The military raided the Cork workhouse, arresting a number of Irish volunteers. Several attacks have been made on police patrols at Ballybay, Constable Malone being killed and three constables wounded. One attacker was killed. •’-Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. Received Jan. 3, 10.20 p.m. London, Jan. 3. General Strickland’* statement explains that the inhabitants of the destroyed houses neglected to inform the military or the police of the ambush. A further warning states that after. Tuesday the property of persons who permit, or do not do their utmost to prevent ambushes, will be destroyed. HOME RULE AT HAND. London, Jan. I. Speaking at a London banquet, Sir Tamar Greenwood (Secretary for Ireland) said that Home Rule would be working in Ireland in six months.—United Service. De Valera’s secretary has announced that the object of De Valera’s return to Ireland is to resume active leadership of the Irish Provincial Government and to press forward the cause of the Irish insurgents.—Reuter DE VALERA’S RESIGNATION POSSIBLE. London, Jan. 2. The Irish Vigilance Society announces ‘that De Valera presided at a meeting of the Dail Eirann, but his Influence is waning, and his resignation is possible. THE LATEST THEORY.
