IRELAND

DE VALERA LANDS THERE. REPORT FROM NEW YORK. SECRET JOURNEY NOT REVEALED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Jan. 7.5 p.m. New York, Dec. 31. Mr. Harry Boland, De Valera’s secretary, announces that De Valera has landed in Ireland. • Received Jan. 1, 7.30 p.m. New York, Jan. 31. The announcement of De Valera’s arrival in Ireland does not mention how the Sinn Fein chief journeyed there. He did not apply for a passport, though he crossed as a member of the crew of a liner. De Valera disappeared three weeks ago, when his secretary emphatically denied that he had returned to Ireland, stating that he was merely seeking a rest. His prolonged absence, however, caused several Irish organisations to inquire what became of the two or three million dollars De Valera raised in the United States by bond subscriptions during the year.

His secretary insists that secrecy is necessary to avoid De Valera’s apprehension by Britain, but in view of hints from London that he would be unmolested, it is thought he has returned to enter into negotiation with the British Government.—Aus and N.Z. Cable Assn. SENSATION IN DUBLIN. WHEREABOUTS UNKNOWN. Received Jan. 2, 5.5 p.m. London, Dec. 31. A sensation was caused in Dublin by the announcement that De Valera had evaded the military and landed in Ireland. His whereabouts are unknown, but according to American reports he is in Ireland. It is believed several house-to-house searches were made last week in Dublin in the hope of arresting De Valera. —Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn. Received Jan. 2, 11.5 p.m. London, Jan. 2. McNulty, presiding at a secret meeting of the Irish Vigilance Society in London, declared that De Valera reached London before Christmas. His resignation as President of the Irish Republic was probable, as he had lost all influence in the Dail Eireann.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn. NO OFFICIAL NEWS. SCOTLAND YARD SUGGESTS BLUFF. Received Jan. 3, 12.35 a.m. London, Jan. 2. The Sunday Express states that Dublin Castle had no news regarding De Valera. Scotland Yard believes he is bluffing his American colleagues.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.
