CHRISTMAS IN LONDON.
A PAINFUL CONTRAST. London, Dee. 22. Though the West End hotels are arranging for-' Christmas entertainments with their customary lavislmess, and the shop windows are overflowing with a wealth of toys and presents, and the markets crammed with an abundance of meat and poultry, this promises to be scarcely a merry Christmas.
Never were the contrasts of wealth and poverty so startling. On the one hand, the rich may buy a rocking-horse for £3O, and turkeys at 3s a lb, while the total value of motor-cars advertised in one paper on Saturday equalled £3.1,405. On the other hand, the papers are full of the details and sufferings of the unemployed. As an example of the workless and homeless, a former military service man without a pension or a donation was found with a wife and new-born child in Tottenham Street on Saturday night. Another former military service man, with a family of five living, has an income of ins a week, of which 9s is spent in rent. The question of the hour is unemployment. A novel sight in London streets recently lias the collecting boxes for the relief of Tilie unemployed.
