NOTES OX THE RACING. * „ (By Wire.—Special to News.)
Auckland, Last Night. The Bowen Handicap, for apprentice riders, induced a field of fourteen starters, with good money for Miss ElHce and Going Up, tlie latter being a stable unate of Arrowsmith. She did not move off well, which told against her, while Miss Klllre Jjist got touched off the last bit into third place by Tressor and Lord Bruce. The winner finished on gamely next lie rails, and is one of John Rae's team, by Flippant. The stable threw for a good win. Pagoda was handy for a. time, but faded out at the rlose. As was generally anticipated, Gloaming won the Islington Plate after King Abbey led to the turn. In the run home he failed out, and Vespucci finished a game second to Ms stable mate, which enhances his prospects for Derby honors. Tbe bracketed pair returned very small figures. Silver Link let n great following down in the Electric Handicap by failing to begin smartly. She had No. 4 position from the rails, and was cut out early. Gray soon got Golden Bubble to the front, and never gave his mount a chance to forget, winning nicely from Dovelet and Winter Wind, with Lightning close up fourth. Golden Bubble's win was overdue, iind he returned a better price than is usual for one of Gray's cmounts. Ho is trained by the ex-New Plymouth trainer, P. Eva.
New Plymouth again carried off the hujfle race with Paddlngton Green, who rc'llsjred his task, aiid defeated a late run !>}• Khartoum, who got up and defeated Thrace for second honors. Oakleigh fell early. The winner returned a slightly belter price than on the opening day. After his good showing in tte Christmas Handicap on the opening day, Maioha, with Gray up, was'always a hot proposition for the Summer Cup, and he duly landed, but only by a narrow margin on the post from Ttuohoro, who made all the running out in front. Maioha was never far back, but had to to his best. Trespass finished on well in third place, witl: Right and Left close up fourth. Prince Willonyx was last at one part, but was well up at the finish. Royal Box, a two-year-old by Nassau, from Starland's stable, was strongly favored for the Criterion Handicap, on a fair showing in the Foal Stakes, and he durr landed finely in the run, after Toa Taua had showed th'o way round the bend. The winner may de-' velop inlo a great horse, as he has lots of speed. Winning Hit and Kick Oft both finished on well in tte places. The hack mile and a quarter, the Waiter mata Handicap, Vent to Canowindra, whom O'Shea rushed to the front early and he stayed it out well, though Formalin, who finished- second, was badly placed early, and at one sitae must have been giving the lender fully, a hundred yards. His supporters were unfortunate in not collecting tto first dividend; War Tank was right up third, ami Persian. King was fourth. The winner who is by loplnjay from Nancy Stair, returned good dguble figures. Bonnie Heathor and Adr;ceUrriert the bulk of the money, the latter beßj» ridden by Gray, hut they 'were squarely b&ten. Royal Ahhy wils considered unbeatable in the Plnnket teller by the heads. However, his weight tdd In the game, and he never fluttered 1-is importers. The winner proved to be Raceful w i,om O'Shea rushed to the front, which Ja s BO od policy, for he lasted •' long enough i d6feil , „ fast flriishilie , lffort by Prince CWleroi, with Windorah right alongside Heather Sprig fourth.
