December 29. , Mr. Elliott Fleming, of Port Chalmers, who was selected by the Borough Council to iiII the vacant position of borough electrical engineer, was in Stratford today and met the/ electric lighting committee of the Council. Mr. Fleming informed the committee that after carefttl consideration he had decided not to accept the position. It is understood that the Council will now ask the second applicant selected to meet them. Stratford presented a much busier appearance to-day, and numbers ot visitors are now beginning to arrive for the races on Saturday and Monday next. It is noticeable that the police are now enforcing the new borough by-laws, more particularly as regards motor traffic in Broadway, and a considerable improvement may be expected in the .appearance of the main thoroughfare on future busy days. In anticipation of the Stratford races, the borough employees have been making improvements to Pembroke ■ Road, between Broadway and the 5 course, the road has been cleared ,of

| weeds, and the footpaths given much- | needed attention. The footpaths in \ Broadway north and Juliet Street have i also been attended to lately.

_The proprietor of the Medina Tea and Dining Rooms advertises that the rooms w.ill be open every day from December 30 to January 4, for the convenience of the public and visitors to Stratford (Sundays included).

The P.A.C. advertise that owing to shortage of space they wish to notify »11 vendors of articles which have been fn their auction rooms for more than six weeks, for sale subject to reserve, that such articles must be removed before January 6 or the reserves taken off.
