TWENTY. MILLION IN DISTRESS. 'AN APPEAL FOR FUNDS By Telegrsph.-~Press Assn.—Couyright. Wellington, Last Night. . The Minister of Internal Affairs has received from the Chinese Consul an urgent appeal for funds to combat the effects of the terrible famine now raging in several provinces of China. The Minister states that any moneys forwarded to the Under-Secretary of Internal Affairs will be dispatched to the British Legation At Peking and devoted to relief work. The Chinese Consul is advised that some 20,000,000 people ai'o in dire distress, and that a* very large sum of money will be required before much good can be done. Appeals for assistance are being made to all the allied nations, and the Consul believes that New Zealand will maintain its reputation for generosity.
