ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY.
WORK AT NEW PLYMOUTH. "The executive ctfuncil of the New Plymouth Society met' on Thursday evening at the residence of the president (Mr. S. Percy Smith), who occupied the chair. The treasurer (Mr. T. M. Avery) reported that a small credit balance was now in the bank, and that a few subscriptions had still to come in.
The hon. director (Rev. Oscar Blundell) gave a brief report of the work at the observatory to date. Several hundreds of people have availed themselves of the opportunities afforded for viewing the heavenly bodies, and a good number of scholars from the Secondary and primary schools have been given lessons upon astronomy; The twelveinch parabolic mirror, in the possession of the Society, has been carefully tested by Mr. J, T. Ward/ of Wanganui, witli highly satisfactory results. He reports that the mirror is a. very fine one, and lie is to retain it in his cai'e until the Society has sufficient funds in hand to pay for the necessary mounting, which, when completed, will place a very powerful telescope at the disposal of the New' Plymouth public. To mount and house the mirror about two hundred pounds will be required, and the Society's treasurer will be very glad to receive donation); towards this object. The thanks of the Society are due to several of its members for providing a sum of money with which to purchase Goodacre's magnificent map ef the moon. This has been sent for to London, and should arrive in the course of a few months. It will prove of great value in connection with the observation of lunar topography "Being carried on ai the local observatory. It is hoped that the local observers will be able to add something to the knowledge of the surface of our sattelite in the course of time.
The Society's assistant secretary (Mr. F. J. Morshead) gave in a report of observations of the recent eclipse of the moon. Careful preparations were made prior to the date of this phenomenon, but unfortunately the night was too cloudy for any successful work to be done.
