' December 2S. Stratford had an air of Tonliness about it and although many of the shops remained open very little business was done. Several retailers who opened up this morning decided after a few hours to close up for the rest of the day, and judging by the very few people about the streets, all the others would have been well advised to have followed their example. Tho outward iiound trains to New. Plymouth, Ngaere and and othe. places took a great many passengers, those who possessed motor cars appeared to make good use of them again to-day. The X-ray plant which has arrived for the Stratford Pnblic Hospital wijl be fitted up early _in"the New Year, when some experts from Wellington will arrive to take charge of the work. The new nurses' cottage at the hospital is now completed, and will be occupied by the nutsea in a few days' time, The cottage in a valuable addition to the hospital buildings and will provide more comfortable quarters for the staff. Christmas gifts to the Stratford Hospital are gratefully acknowledged by the matron from the following: Mrs. O'Reilly, Mrs. Sw, Mrs. Budge, Mrs. R. McK. MorisonTllrs. P. Thomson, the W.C.T.U., anonymous (2), the Co-op. Store a Co., the Racing Club, Messrs. Bretherton, Grubb, C. E. James, D. J. Malone and Main.

STRATFORD GUN CLUB. The Stratford Gun Club held a successful shoot in a new piece of ground on Messrs. Neteon«and Green's property, on Saturday. The day was very warm and sultry, while occasional i high gusts of wind made the shooting inclined to be erratic, but on the whole some good scores were registered. The most consistent competitor was B. C. Wheeler, of New Plymouth, who had only three misses out of 39 shots. A six-a-side competition which was held, between teams from Eltham and Stratford, resulted in_ a tie, each team scoring 59 hits each. Another two rounds were then fired, and the Eltham representatives (Harrison, Coleman, Casev, Wheeler, Jenkins and Mellor) were declare') the winneiß by one point. The losers (Whittle, Green, Nelson, Jackson, and Martin) had to pay for the ammunition for the match. There is siated to be a challenge afloat for a teams match.

Following q£e the details of the other competitions:—

No. 1 Sweep.—F. Whittle (19yds) I and B. Green (15yds) registered the poseible (12 birds) and dividad. B. C. Wheeler (17v,ds), H. Harrison (17yds) and G. Mitchell (11yds) only one off the possible. Eleven competed. No. 2 Sweep.—B. C. Wheeler (17vds> broke the lot (12 birds) and won first money; F. Whittle (20yds), B. Green (iflyds) and J. Jackson' (16yds) registered 11 each. Twelve competed. The teams match wag shot in this Bweep, and two additional rounds were fired. In the first round, two misses on each side were- registered, while in the second, one Stratford shooter failed to break the clay and the honors went to President Harrison's side.

?vo. 3 Sweep—H. Harrison (17yds), -V kelson (17yds) and J. Jackson (10 yds) broke the possible (9) and divided. Four others (Wheeler, Whittle, Coleman Green, and Mitchell) broke eight. Twelve competed. In a six-bird first mis 6 out, B. Green n! 5 'j S ' A ', Nelaon ( 18 yis), Casev (14vds) and G. Mitchell broke the lot and divided. Eleven competed. The annual meeting 0 f the Club will be held on January 15.
