DISTRICT NEWS.
KAPONGA. (Frotn Qitr Own"Correspondent.) At the Kaponga School examinations held this year the following pupils gained their proficiency certificates in the following order of merit: Bradleigh Benton (dux of school) ( Beatrice Williams, Clarice Lichtwark, Isabel Guy and William King. In the regaining standards the following gained highest marks in each class: Standard V, Olannel Behely; standard IV, Clifford.Des Forges; standard 111, Digby Benton; standard 11, Kenneth Macks; standard I, Richard Noonan. The Methodists have cause to be gratified at the results of their garden party, held this month, for the proceeds amounted to £4O. The Kaponga children have been more than favored this year, for, besides receiving prizes at the school, they were awarded handsome prizes and gifts from the non-sectarian Bible Glass, and from the _ Christmas tree party held in the Parish Hall. Mr. Hawken M.P., presented the former prizes, while the latter function was conducted by the Rev. C. Palmer, of Opunake. Kaponga presented quite a gay and busy appearance on Christmas Eve, the streets and shops being crowded "with children and adults. Haymaking has now started all round, and so far the crops have been heavy, while the weather has been more seasonable. Practically all the factories round hero are now making butter, while the remaining- few cheese makers expect to change over next month.
