Fourteen were killed in Ireland during Christmas week-end, including a girl who w*« shot dead while attempting to protect Conrtable Richardson at Limerick. Richardson was walking with Elizabeth Scales, aged 22, on Sunday evening, when four men seized the constable's revolver and levelled it against the policeman. Elizabeth rushed in between Richatdton and the murderers, and waa shot dead. Sinn Feineri were responsible for the Cork Examiner outrage.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn. SPREADING FALSE REPORT. Fitzgerald and Edwards, proprietors of Freeman's Journal, were sentenced to twelve months for spreading a false report, the sentence to be concurrent with, -•that of six months they are now serv- j lig. Hopper, editor of Freeman's Journal, was charged with dissimulating false newS regarding the Crown force* in Ireland, and was sentenced to one year in gaol. The paper •as fined £3ooo.—Aui.-N.Z. Cable Assn. DESTRUCTIVE RAIDERS. NEWSPAPER PROPERTY DAMAGED. London, Dec. 26. Raiders at' the Cork Examiner office broke the machinery with hammers and wrecked parts of the building with explosives. The* then fired the priperty and escaped before the arrival of the police. The fire was extinguished, but other damage was extensive. The raiders, who wore plain clothes, said they were acting under the orders of the Irish Republic. It is believed the attack was caused by the Examiner's attitude towards the Bishop k pf Cork's recent pastoral letter. '*• DANCE HALL ATTACKED.
London, Dee. 2T. The Crown forces surprised a dance meeting at Brufr, Limerick, within the martial law area. The forces were fired on from the hall and a policeman was killed. The fire ( was returned and Ave civilians were killed. AU bore arms; 138 persons were detained.
