SETTLEMENT OF DISPUTE. SEASON OPENS NEXT WEEK, The secretary of the New Piymouth branch of the Freezing Workers' Union was advised yesterday evening bv the general secretary at' Wellington" (Jlr. Aiall) of the settlement of tho* aieuute ju the freezing industry,- The terms are a. 20. per cent increase for piece workers, and 25 per cent advance for hourly and weekly workers. The latter will now receive from 2s 2id to about 2s f>d per hour. A settlement having been arrived at companies will no douot lose little time in commencing operations, but it is not probtiMe tlmt any call wil! be made before £ho New Year. The manager of the Taramiki Farmers' Meat Co. (Mr. H. B. Gray) informed a Daily News reporter last night that the works at Smart Road would probably be opened on January 4. It is expected that full killing will commence right .away, which means that the works will be dealing with about 1200 sheep and lambs and 120 head of cattle daily.
Practically all of the meat on hand will be removed by the Whangaratta, which is to make'a call at New Plymouth during January. No approximate d/ito of tho vessel's arrival at tha port, however, has yet been announced. The consignment to be lifted consists of beef purchased by Vesteys, and when this has been removed there will be remaining in store of last season's output only 1000 boxes of boneless beef.
'No other allotments of space havo been made as yet. but in various parts of Now Zealand during January there will be 14 big steamers loajling meat, with a total capacity of 1,526,000 carcases of (10 pounds.
