I THE RACING DESCRIBED I NOTES BY "MOTUROA." '" (By Wire.—Special to News.) Palmenton N., Last Night; The Manavvatu summer meeting opened in windy, but fine weather, and before a record attenAince. The course was very hard. Imaribbon broke down in the Cup, and there will be plenty of sore horses before the meeting closes. Sixteen lined up for the Trial Plate, the principal absentee being Interest. Merry Queen (H. Reed) was a strong order in a splendid betting race. Top Dog led along the back, but La Paloma and Merry Queen closed up at the home bend. Merry Queen then went on to win easily from La Paloma, who was just in front of Lord Usk and Kuia. Maniahera and Buckeye were the only withdrawals from the Hurdles, leavin* eleven runnera, Hautawa led Falstaf£ Old Gold, and Sweet Tipperary for six furlongs. Then A. McDonald took Crosswords to the front. Falstaft was second when he fell at the third fence from home, interfering with Old Gold. Crosswords led Pawerewere into the straight and won in hollow fashion from Old Gold, who just got up in time to heat Pawerewere for second money Hautawa was fourth. There were seventeen runners in the GilUes Hack Handicap, and over £IO,OOO went on the tote. Waimahoe broke a good line, and led Handy and a bunched lot into the straight. Handy then assumed command, but had to be'ridden out to beat Yankee Dan. Valley Rose was a close third, and Waimahoe was fourth. Shamrock got a very bad passage, but will do better before the meeting CIOSCR.

Volo, Marqueteur, and Molyneaux were absentees from the Manawatu Cup, the hardness of the ground accounting for the withdrawal of the latter. Nine went to the post and the tote handled over £13,000. There was a long delay at the post, Imaribbon's rider being too anxious. Eventually all left together, and Nobleman, Imaribbon and "lovematch led the bunch. Cleft ran past Lovematch the first time in the straight and the pair led Dusky Eve and Nobleman. Past the stand Bonnie Maid tailed off, and Lovematch took the lead again along the back, with Montoa Ivanova next and Imaribbon, Dusky Eve Nobleman, Client and Esperance all' within striking distance.* The excitement ran high as they bunched entering the straight, Moutoa Ivanova, Esperinoe, Dusky Eve and Client all going 'trongiy MeCarten went for an inner ivith Client, and got it, hut Esperance md Montoa Ivanova still iiad over u ength lead, and the Fordell crack had to >e ridden right out. Inch by inch he 'rept up, and amidst a wonderful scene )f enthusiasm he got his nose in front, in he last few strides. Esperance was a lead in front of Moutoa Ivanova, with )nsky Eve and Imaribbon right up iext. Cleft was last. The winner reeived a great reception on returning to eale, his effort being recognised as a itting climax to the greatest race seen 11 the course, Warship's memorable win ot excepted. Sixteen two-year-olds lined up for the .ursery Handicap. Capping Day broke good line, but Scion quietlv headed er, with Creme de Menthe and"Anomaly illowiiig. Scion led into the straight, ut Anomaly challenged and won very isily. Dissertation was a close third, nd laiparu fourth. Capping Day ran ide at the home hend.

A moderate field went out for Hie Welter. Stutter led Pavilion and AH U-risc out of the straight, and tlie order "•as the same until nearing home, where festivity, Pentc and Sweet Simon drew "p. festivity was in front at the distance, but Pente had too much in her for the run home. Sweet Song was a close third, and Stutter fourth. Blackmail and Handy were the only withdrawals front the Fitzherbert's handicap, Acre, Solfanello and Inah being the most discussed candidates. From ft «ood start Inah »h, 9SS S wy

Sweet Memory ami Nursing Sister td the turn, where the last named took lead, but after looking all oyer a win* ner died away and an outsider in Pari- 1 sian Diamond got up in time to win from Solfanello and Affectation, with Sweet Memory, Nursing Sister and Inah all close up, The winner returned ft false price. • Scratch'ings reduced the field for tjift Grandstand Handicap to eight, Borealis, Idle Talk and Jutland being <|he nxjst admired. Demagogue led Idle Talk, Borealis and'.Jutland along flie bafck. Idle Talk led into the straight, but P*banui.
