NOTES ON THE RACING. GRAY'S SUCCESSFUL DAY. (By Wire.—Special to News.) Auckland, Last Night. Racing at Ellerslie was conducted l,n great weather, and in the presence of a record crowd, so vast in numbers that tho space inside the enclosure was fully taxed, and hundreds failed to get a clear view of the races, which were well and clea, nly contested. Long delays between the events, and an early start, enabled the totalisator staff to register a fresh figure record. Bonnie Heather and Forest Gold were freely supported by the public for the Shortland Plate, but tho former was ralrly beaten into second place by Geoffrey, a three-year-old son of Limelight, which stayed on better than was generally expected. Early Dawn was a quiet I'.p, and made a bold bid from the liatrrier rise, but failed to hold the lead over tho last furlong, and finally filled third berth. Forest Gold, who was placed fourth, finished wide out, and many thought it actually won. It Bhould be tandy in a longer race of the same class. Pagoda showed out with the leaders for six furlongs, but Over There, Marble Slab Snd Actrice were keen disappointments, though the latter was not favored during the running. Counter Attack looked as if the race would., improve him, |
Mermln maintained his unbeaten record by capturing the Great Northern Foal Stakes, though in less experienced rojids than Gray's his defeat may easily have come about, for The Hawk put a good break on the flelgj from the start, and Gray's best had to be utilised to make the nty»Wt on the stake, for The Hawk fought gamely throughout. Maumt was a fajp third, anil Grotesque fourth.
Prince Jewel, a Giabouto candidate, let a very shrewd crowd down by failing to' win tre Itoblnson Handicap, though an excuse is offered in the shape of some unintentional Interference which he suffered. The winner turned up in Lovellght, a three-year-old gelding by Lucullus, who had recent placed form at country meetings. He won .it the right end from Tlnohoro. though the latter was not well placed in the early part. Clon-' mel stowed some pace to the turn, and fliyished fourth behind Hyrax, while ForanSn was finishing on. Aircraft was bracketed with the winner.
The Cup was not a fast run rac& but it was interesting throughout. PerKaps First Salute may be dubbed unlucky "not ta score, for though ridden a masterlj 'race by Robi.ison he met with some flight interference when lis rider first asked him for aa effort. This cost him a few lengths, which made ail «.he dlfferenca at the business end for the Ughtly-violßhtea Statland did not have a great advantage passing the .post. Thai winner went kindly thrqujrlout for ycwnei Glover, one of Hannon'a boys. The success 1 of tre son of Nassau was well ntticipated by the trainer (O'Donnell) and the owner (Mr. Gerald Stwrd). Blue Crow was the leader for the most part, with the field well bunched almost throughout, during which! Uncle Ned and Oratress were Iwth pocketed at times, which told against their hopes Gasbag was always well placed, and anlsbedj tf'.'-o, just lu front of Oratress. The Eugllsh horse, Prince. Wlllonyx, ran a »reat race, being third for the most part when Ihtiy settled down, but Pe tired, ove' the' last furlqng, and was one of the last to flnis.l. Considering he has n>*ne little wnk In his preparation, the raw may work wnodors with him. NlghtraiSei disgraced rimset absolutely, refusing to. go up to Hie field over the Brat mile, *„d, victor being hopeless, he was pulled up. Glencanny, Sunart and lUhjonr were all withdrawn owing !o •iisplaythg symptoms of soreness, and the ■iitti-? pair are unlikely starter* at the ir.eet-
The. New Plymouth-owned Paadlngton Grc<>9 wen the hurdle race from Oalileigh and Khartoum, who dead-leated for lioirjrs, with Luperlno fourth. The latter may have been close had another competitor not jumped across him at the last fence. The winner was ridden a patient race by tlnwt'pn, whi:!i had lune.hlng to do wi;„ lie sucress. Khartoum -as finishing on w'l in third place, while Oaklelirh surprised ni..st peopic b.y showing out in front sill the last half-furlong.
Uhero was good money for Arrowsmlth, Statuette and Humbug in the Railway Handi-] cap, which Statuette, won nicely iii tiraj;"! hinds from Silver Kink, Right and Left uml Lovclet, in that order. Statuette and Silver Link were always with the leaders once they settled down, while Himouet showed up : ,i the home turn and looked likely it the distance, but the task of chasing Statuette was too great, and he faded out when the pressure came. Hymestra lad every show but ttt vi«taM m, it, iigmaith* «g£ gp,
Statuette, drew outside positions. Dovelet's forward showing wa* not altogether looUe.t for, while Golden Bubble ran a fair race.
A surprise was in s(6re In the Nursery Handicap, which went to Lelthfleld, a stable mate of Startand. The winner was ridden by young Jarvis, who got his mcimt out uuieMy, and made every post a winning one, finally capturing the stake from Uualii and Ton Tana, tie favorite selections. Soullorlua was fourth.
Tho Christmas Handicap found Gray again in great form on Maioha, who was call.nl upon for a great effort to head Tisi'liya in tho last furlong. Tlio pair mentioned wero always liamly in tho early part, but Tigriolya looked unbaatable Inside tlio distance. A '.well-backed horse, In Heather Sprig, was Just outside tho money
