TARANAKI DAILY NEWS STRATFORD AGENCY. ,J^ re ! tiSera ! nt 3, and lteras ° f new* foi BUM cation should be left at the office o: «!Stalis? ,rMeau,lTe ' W - J - Wlison - ""' YOUNG MAN'S DEATH. December 23. An inquest into the circumstances of the death of Richard Stanley Stanford, 23 years of age, who was found dead at his father's farm at Huiroa on Wednesday morning, was held at the Courthouse to-day_ before Mr. C. D. Sole, J.P. s The following jury was empanelled: h. T. Alyward (foreman), E. MeCluggage, C. E. James, and J. Petrip, junr. Sergeant Dale conducted the investigation. Dr. D. Stevens, medical superintendent of the Stratford Hospital, deposed that he held a post-mortem examination of the body of deceased on Wednesday afternoon. There were no marks of violence on the body, and death was due . to asphyxia caused by the presence of hydatids on the heart, one of which had fractured the right auricle. There were no bruises or any traces of drink about the body. To the Coroner: The fact of deceased having been gassed' in France would not account for his death: The presence of hydatid cysts was long-standing, probably for some years. His condition might have been mistaken for the effects of gas-poisoning, but it was quite impossible to diagnose it as the cause of death. It was a very uncommon occurrence to discover hydatids in the heart. Death was practically due to heart failure. The hydatids would | probably have been caught from a dog. To the foreman: A 'coughing fit might have caused the rupture to happen when it did, but the tendency of the hydatids was to finally rupture as it grew. James A. Stanford, father of deceased, gave evidence that his son had boon two years away at the front and had returned about eighteen months ago. Witness had received advice from the Defence Department that his son had been gassed in France. Thomas Reginald Stanford, brother of deceased,, gave evidence as to finding the body. The Coroner remarked that it was most remarkable that a man with a . heart filled with hydatid cysts had been : .ahle to dp. any work at ail. It was a •; miracle that he had been able to live and carryron as he had done. The doc- ; tor had informed him that it was the first case of its kind in his personal experience, and such cases were very rare. Ihe jury returned a verdict that death ; war due to heart failure brought about by hydatid cysts found in the heart. :/ GENERAL. • EAtbef, Christmas arrived in Stratford to-day 'and has mads his headquarters at C.
