GOVERNOR-GENERAL AS A YACHTSMAN.

FIRST APPEARANCE IN NEW ZEALAND WATERS.

More than usual interest was taken in the Shore Yacht Club's race for the 14ft one-design class on Saturday, owing to the fact that the Governo'rUeneral, Lord .lellicoe, was to be seen at the helm of his new boat, the Iron Duke (says the Auckland Herald). As His Excellency was sailing his first race in Auckland—in the Dominion, in fa.ct—a very large number of yachting enthusiasts and the general public gathered on the King's Wharf to witness the race, while a number of yachts and launches followed the boats round the course. * The race was sailed in (he harbor, and brought out ten starters, all of which finished except one. The wind was very light when the race started, and in keeping rather too far away from the starting line, which was 'off the end of lung's Wharf, the Iron Duke was unable to reach the line in time, with the result that she got a bad start, being tire last boat but one to ei;oss. Shortly after the start a nice northerly breeze sprang up, and the Iron Duke at onee began to overhaul her opponents. One by one she headed them, and when the first mark—Resolution buoy—was reached she had sailed into fifth position. The beat across to the Sandspit beacon enabled her to close up on the leaders, Ola, Idler, Edna and Kewpie, but she was unable to head them. After rounding beacon, however, the Iron Duke replaced both Edna and Kewpie, but before the first round was completed she was again overtaken by Kewpie. Tn the second round Iron Duke maintained her position, finishing fourth, after a most exciting race with Kewpie. The performance of the Iron Duke is a very creditable one, especially as the type of boat is new to Ilis Excellency, and also that he is not yet accustomed to the harbor currents. Among the boats that were beaten by the Iron Duke was the Meteor, winner of ihc race for one-designers held recently by the Royal Xew Zealand Yacht Siyiadron.
