The Taranakl holiday racing carnival promises to be bigger and better than ever ibis year, splendid acceptances having been received for the Taranakl Jockey Club's Christmas meeting (December 27, and ine Stratford Racing Club's meeting (January 1, 3). Not only are the fields large, but the class is much above the average, and Include Auckland, Waverley, Wanganui, Marton, Bulls, Palmerston North and Hastings representatives, as well as the best horses in training in our own province. The various race tracks are in fine order, and given a continuation of the present fine weather splendid meetings should result. A feature of the acceptances is the very fine, array of hacks. In fact, a finer lot could not be picked oulside Taranaki. Fields are growing uuweildy, to say the least of It, and the time is not far distant when racing clubs will have to reduce the number of races on the card to enable divisions to be run, and still keep within the limits of the rules of raolng. It Is commonly acknowledged that moderately sized fields produce better and more interesting racing, and encourage more spirited betting. Nowadays we see races for horses that have never won at all. In the future clubs may be forced to weed the runners still further, perhaps even going so far as to limit certain races to horses tl:at have won races, or at least earned place-money. The majority of the "roughles" that are at present lagging superfluous on the turf would thou have to take their chance In maiden races, or go back to their proper place—in the plough! That very capable horseman, Sid Reid, who is private trainer us Mr. Bruce .1011, in Hawera, has got back to riding weight again, and intends joining the ranks of the jocksters. Whatever horses Sid pilots at the Christmas meetings, they will have a bit In their favor as regards horsemanship. Special and delayed trains have been arranged to carry patrons to the Taranaki Jockey Club's Christmas meeting on Monday and Tuesday ncit. The first race starts at 12 noon each day. so flat visitors will have ample time to see the first race. The Citizens' Band will be In attendance, and Mr. E. P. Webster and his assistants have left no stono unturned to ensure the pleasure and comfort of patrons.

The publication of n' series of lurf lilies and tit-bits in the News Christum number has produced a number of requests for more, and the writer has to thank many correspondents for personal pars forwarded. These will be published as soon as possible, but nt present space is at a pr&fnium. P.S.: Any good "sport" who imagines himself slighted by being overlooked in the Christmas crackers may console himself with the assurance that his turn is comine—perhaps very soon! THE MANAWATU MEETING. The Manawatu meeting, which opens at Awapunl on Monday next, and will he continued on the Tuesday tfnd Thursday, promises to be a record gathering, and is bound to attract a. proportion of the sports from this province. Excellent acceptances have been received for the Manawatu Cup, of 12r>0 sovs., 1% mile, twelve accepting, the wellknown Taranaki performer Volo, being at the head of the weights. The principal sprint event on the first day, the Fitzherkert Handicap, valued at 600 sovs., has also drawn sixteen, Tarrnakl being represented by Inah. The other events lave all filled well, and the sport promises to he interesting throughout.
