SHIPPING DEADLOCK. NO EARLY SETTLEMENT S IHE MAHENO TO SAIL. i By Telegraph.—Press Assn,—Copyright. Received" Dec. 22, 11,5 p.m. Sydney, Dec. 22. The Union Company announce that the Maheno is sailing for Auckland on Friday. The Melbourne stewards approached the owners with a view 1o affecting a settlement. Details have not yet been announced, but it is stated the owners will insist that the men should return to their ships before negotiations begin. An Carly settlement is hot expected. The tonnage rendered idle now totals 120,000. More New Zealand traders have been affected.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. Sydney, Dec. 22. Advices from shipping circles state that there are no prospects of settlement before Christmas. It k estimated that 20,000 are idle as the result of the strike. The dispute between the Federation of Seamen's Unions and the Tasmanian shipowners has not been settled, the idt» ter deciding that the Arbitration Board shall determine the issue. Sydney seamen threaten to complicate matters further if the Tasmanian dispute is not settled. . As the result of the shipping dislocation inter-State traffic is diverted overland, compelling the railway authorities to pitovide extra trains.
