Reference to the recent floods in the Waimakariri and the necessity for taking steps to avert the menace'was made at a meeting of the Canterbury Philosophical Institute this week by Mr. A. I). Bobson (city surveyor), Christchurch, was in the same position, he said, as some Italian cities which had been flood-' ed. Committees of learned men had studied the actions of rivers, and he considered that the institute should do something in the same direction in regard to the Waimakariri. It had been found that, in 4,i years, it had filled up, in one place, aboiit seven miles from Cljrislchurch. to the extent of 12ft. It might come tumbling over there. The question was much, more serious than the public realised. If the river had broken through during the recent floods, instead of coming down a middle channel, there was no saying what damage would have been done. It. was quite on the cards that the river would break through—and it would not be convenient to shift Christchurch. It was decided, on Mr. Dobson's motion, that the council of the institute should be asked to go into the question and collect infonnatit» raf srred to.
