ARBITRATION COURT.
HOTEL EMPLOYEES AWARD. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Dec. 21. The Arbitration Court awarded a 48hour week for the Wellington district hotel, club and restaurant employees to-day. A memorandum attached to the award states that the reduction was strongly opposed by the employers, hut in view of the fact'that a 48-hour week is practically universal in Australia as the result of awards and agreements the court saw no reason why it should not be equally practicable in New Zealand. The hours being so re/uced the court was not able to grant a material increase in wages, which it adjusted by | increasing the basic wage. Not more than ten hours are to he worked on any | one day without payment of overtime, except under special circumstances, and workers are not to be brought back after a day's task is done until after an interval of at least ten hours. A sixday week was granted, one full day's holiday per week and one week's holiday v per year on full pay after twelve months' service, and a proportionate allowance for a shorter service, pay to mean wages plus an allowance for board and lodging. The minimum wages are: Chef £5, second £3 10s, third £2 7s fid, all others £2, where five are employed or more. Where four are employed: Chef £4 10s, second £3, third £2 os. all others £2. Three employed: Chef £3 17s 6d, second £2 10s, all others £2. Two: Chef £3, second £'2 2s fid. The minimum rates are increased by a bonus of 10s per week for male and as for female workers. Waiters £3, head waitresses £1 15s, others £1 10s, barmaids £3.
The award also provides for casual workers, work at race meetings, and overtime at time and a-half rates.
