NEW ZEALAND INDUSTRIES.
SIR T. MACKENZIE OrTIMISTIC. Christcluirch, Dec. 20. Sir Thomas Mackenzie was accorded a civic reception to-day, and in returning thanks he was very optimistic about New Zealand industries. > Jn the war, he said, the overseas ■ Dominions had shown themselves to be more selfreliant/* than anyone had ever deemed possible. There was urgent need that room should be found for more people on the land and in the secondary industries. The facilities for manufacturing at present were better than those of older lands.
"If you can only get the people, the results will surprise you," he continued. "A leading man in the trade told me lately it would be possible to make woollen goods 25 per cent, cheaper here than in Britain. Canada is already turning out woollen fabrics in large quantities. Surely we, with our raw materials, water-power, cheap supplies of food, and other advantages should be able to develop the industry to a real magnitude and other industries as vMI."
