STUDENT DROWNED.

IN SIGHT OF HIS COMPANIONS. TRAGEDY IN THE MANAWATU. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston N., Last Night. The Manawatu River was the scene of drowning accident this morning, the victim being Arthur Cyril Loveridge, 21, who was in company' with three companions, Leith Morine, Joseph Silaon and Turner. They had been across the river onee and then returned to what is known as the island in the stream. Loveridge told his mates he would have another swim, and the others went ashore, while he started off upstream again. After going some distance hp turned round, and swam down stream about 200 yards on.his back. He was then seen to suddenly disappear in about 4 feet JO inches of water.

ATorine called out to the others and a search was commenced for the body, which was discovered about 10 minutes afterwards. Dr. Bett resorted to artificial respiration without success.

Deceased was a stranger to Palmerston North,, and it is understood his people resided at Nelson. Loveriuge was a student at the Kclburn Training College, and had only left that institution ' a few days ago.
