SCHOOLS BREAK-UP.

VOGELTOWN SCHOOL. The annual breaklng-up ceremony and prize distribution In connection with the Vogellovm School took place on Thursday afternoon, a large number of parents and friends being present, Mr. V. Griffiths (chairman of tfco school committee) presided, and expressed his pleasure in seeing such a good assembly, and took the opportunity of thanking parents and friends for their liberal response! to the prize fund, which had made It possllfe to give prizes not only to those scholars who had gained the higher percentage of marks In their respective classes and tlijse who had attended regularly throughout the year, but to every boy and girl on the school roll. Mr. Orifflths disc publicly thanked, *ljte committee who had been working throughout the winter In connection with the series of card parties. As a result of their efforts a sum of nearly £2O had been raised, and with, the Govern-,, ment subsidy this would earn, the committee would have something like £4O to spend on much desired Improvements to the school grounds. TTe chairman congratulated ' the headmaster (Mr. Allan) and his assistants (Mrs. Wilkes and Miss Gibson) upon the efforts they had put forth during the year, The prizes were then distributed, each boy and girl receiving a book. The actual prize list was as follows:

FRANKLEY SCHOOL. The breaklng-iup ceremony In connection with the Frankley School took place in the frankley gymnasium yasterday afternoon, Mr.' A. Davis, chairman of the Committee presiding. There was « good attendance of parents. Mr, S. G. Smith, M.l*. (Taranaki Education Board) was also present.

The chfjlrmaii. In his opening remarks, apologised for the absence of the chairman of the Board, and congratulated the headmaster and staff on the excellent results achieved. He also expressed regret at the approaching departure of Misses Ducker and Elliott, who had finished their term of probation. ,

Mr. S. G. Smith also congratulated the staff and pupils on their excellent work. He referred to the need for an increased playing area, which, he stated, the Board recognised and were pressing tire matter ou the Department, aud he hoped that they would soon have some finality in the unatta-.

HEADMASTER'S REPORT. The headmaster, Mr. A. V. Sims then presented his annual report, which staled shat tiie roll number at the beginning of the year was 78, and was now 7;" i. In spite of Illness tic results were highly satisfactory, all but three of the pupils below Standard 0 gaining promotion in the recent examination. The Inspector's report showed the efficiency, order, tone, and discipline of the school to he very good. Mr. Sims expressed appreciation of the energy and ability shown by the assistants and the probationer and pupil teacher. Reference was made to the school picnic, the erection of swings by the committee, the institution of dally toothbrush drill, the success of the fancy dress ball in aid of the prize funds owing to the work of the lady teachers in training the children, and to the co-operation of the parent* In providing fancy dresses. Miss Pucker, pupil teacher, and Miss Klliot, probationer, had completed their term, and had done their duty faithfully and well, and they left with the best wishes of all for their future success. Thanks were tendered to Mrs. Arden for kindly donating a special prize, and to Miss Hare and Mr. Davis for donating special: prizes for costumes at the fancy dress ball, and to the P.B.S. for a tin of lollies; and to the School Comimttee for their valuable help

and support. Congratulations were extended to the children who had won prizes, and especially to Lila Bullot, wl:o had the splendid record of having attended school without being absent or lute once during the past four years. The Education Board has sent her a special letter of congratulation, which It was hpoed she will value highly. To those leaving school, lie said "Work rard and do your best, and in your conduct do nothing that you would be ashauned of." Mr. Sims concluded by wishing the scholars a Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year," and hoped they would enjoy their holidays.

Misses Ducker and Elliott were each prlscnied with two volumes of poetical works as marks of esteem by (he teacters and pupils, and each teacher was the recipient of a handsome bouuuet. Cheers were given for the teachers, the chairman, and Mr. S. G. Smith.

Afternoon tea was then dispensed by the idies and fully appreciated.

presidinff over a good attendance of residents. The first part of the programme consisted of an interesting selection of items by the children, who acquitted themselves admirably, and had to respond to encores to every item. The second portion was supplied by the adults, and was also thoroughly enjoyable. The items were as follows:—"Old Woman In a Shoe," junior pupils; "Lads in Navy Blue," senior boys; "Happy Maids," senior girls; "0, Blessed Night," senior pupils; pianoforte solo, Miss Forbes; song, Mr. Jackson; pianoforte duet, Misses Sarton and Strack; song, Miss Forbes. At tho conclusion of tho programme and the distribution of the prizes, Mr. Masters congratulated the children on their efforts at the concert, and also on their progress during the year, and complimented the teachers, Misses Sarton and Guppy, on tho splendid results obtained. On behalf of Miss Sarton, Mr. Masters thanked the young men of the dlstriot f<lr subscribing £4 towards a cricket set for tho boys. Supper was then served to the company, after which the room was cleared, and a dance c&cluded the function.

DOUGLAS SCHOOL. Then annual school concert was held on Tuesday evening. The following programme was creditably rendered by the young folks: —Songs by the pupils: Sweet Klllarney, Holiday. Time. The Wonderful Fan, Redwing, Silver Bells. Action Songs: The Japanese Fan, Beautiful Rainbow, What's the Matter, Little Baggy Breeches, Little, Joiners. Recitations: The .Travelling Post Office, Joy Wltherford. Finding a Thief, Jean Needham. Recitations by the Infants: I'll Tell you a Story, and Little Old Woman. Song, Bonnte Scotland, Evelyn Wilmshurst, who also danced a Scotch dance, accompanied by her father on the bagpipes. Pianoforte solos were also rendered by Misses J. Walters and D. Wilmshurst, and two songs were sung by Mr. Gibbons. A splendid selection of prizes was given out by Mr. R. Masters, M.P., who also tool: the opportunity of saying a few words to the children and their parents. Tho following prizes were distributed:—

Dux of the school, Ernest Walters, who received a gold' medal presented by Mr. Abraham. Constance McLennan wus runner-up for this honor.
