PROSPECTS OF SETTLEMENT.
A CONFERENCE TO-DAY By Telegraph,—Press Association. Chvistehureh, Last Night. The prospects of a settlement between the cooks and stewards and the Union Company seem brighter. The men did hot hand in their notices yesterday, apparently awaiting the result of a conference, which, it is understood, will be held in Wellington tomorrow.
BONUS INSISTED UPON.

The stewards dispute in New Zealand now before the Arbitration Court may take an unfavorable turn if the dcci-ioii is not regarded as favorable by the ...jn. Members of the union have stated that if the extra £2 a month is not awarded the Christmas traffic will be held up.
THE UNION'S CASE. Dunedin, Dec. 18. The formal position in the cooks and stewards' dispute is that their union applied separately for an extra bonus of £2 a month. The application was heard last week, but the judgment, which would he binding, has not yet been delivered. The case differs from that of ordinary daily workers in that the applicants ,are fed and lodged on ships, thereby entailing increased expenditure as the cost of living, the defraying of which is the ground of the application.

FURTHER STEAMERS IDLE. SPREAD TO CARGO BOATS. Received Dec 20, 12.30 a.m. Sydney, Dec. 10, There have been no developments in the shipping trouble, excepting that further inter-Stato steamers have been rendered idle. There is a possibility of the strike extending to cargo boats. A number of New Zealaniiers and intending Davis Clip visitors are greatly disappointed at the indefinite postponement of sailings. —Aus.-N.Z. CabTe Assn.
TASMANIAN ACTION.
Melbourne, Dee. 18,
The Tasmanian Government Ims informed Mr. Hughes that it is willing to pay the increases for three months, if the strike ia not settled in the interim. Mr. Hughes is consulting the companies, incidentally promising to divert Commonwealth shipping to Tasmania where practicable. The wharf laborers have complicated matters by submitting claims for 5s 3d an hour.
