Bailey, S.M., presided over the fortnightly sitting of the Stratford, Court to-day. James Stanford was charged with allowing 17 heifers to trespass on the railway yards at Iluiroa. Sergeant Dale said the defendant had had to pay 18s to the railway authorities before he could secure the release of the cattle, but he had not known of this until that morning. He thought the Railway Department should have communicated with the police regarding the matter, instead of allowing the defendant to be punished twice. The Magistrate said that possibly the Department had taken advantage of that section of the Impounding Act which entitred them to impound stock found on their own property. Defendant was convicted and discharged. Judgment was given for the plaintiff by default, in each of the following civil cases:—Stratford Hospital Board (Mr. Young) v. Percy Rosewarre, £l3 6s (costs £2 12s);'Hannah and Co. (Mr. Macal»;ter) v. J. Dodunski, £2 33 (costs £1 9s 6d); Same v. A. J. Hill, £4 4s 9d (costs £) 3s 6d); T. H. Bransgrove v. B. Hart, £1 6s (costs 8s); T. R. Julian (Mr. King) v. A. J. Hill. £22 7s 4d (costs £3 Is). In judgment summons eases F. Canute was ordered to pay £o 13s Cd forthwith to J. H Qninn (Mr. Young;, and Akapihirangi Manuirirangi was ordered to pay £l4 forthwith to John Davies (Mr. Macalister). In the case of McCluggage and Co. (Mr. Truby King) v. J. Whittington (Mr. Macalister), a claim for £ll 4s fid for moneys alleged to be due, further evidence was given for the plaintiff by J. W. B. Jones, regarding a conversation between the plaintiff and defendant, which took place in pjaintiff's office, when the defendant had agreed to pay £1 Ids in order to get possession of a house. The cheque was made out by Mr. McCluggage, defendant agreeing to pay the money to him. At this stage the case was further adjourned until January 14; 1921. GENERAL.

At the conclusion of to-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court, Mr. T. A. B. ,Bailey, S.M. remarked that as it was the last sitting before the long vacation he wished to take the opportunity of wishing_the members of the Bar, the police and tile staff a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. The compliment was returned by the members of the Bar present.

The children's Christmas tree and party whjeh. was held by the Stratford Lodge of Druids in the Foresters' Hall last night was a success in every respect, and the iflO youngsters who were present had the time of their lives. Prior to the war the party was an annual affair and was a source of great delight to the children whoso parents belonged to the. Druid order, and last night's function was the first which had been held for several years. A Christmas tree, beautifully decorated and laden with toys, was placptl in the centre of the hall, and after the children had been each presented with a bag of lollies and fruit, Father Christmas came into the room and gave every child a toy from the tree. The floor was then cleared and the thoroughly enjoyed themselves by playing games and having a good romp round. During the evening musical items were given by Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Penn, and Messrs. C. H. Fox and O. Dick and Arch Druid, W. Abraham welcomed the visitors, who included several from other lodges. At the conclusion of the children's party a dance was held for the adults, the children being taken to their homes in motor cars kindly lent oy friends. Bro. Warcup took the part of Father Christmas. Mrs. Bianchi's annual social and dance was held in the Town Hall last night, and an enjoyable time was spent by the large number who were present. The waltzing reversing competition was won by Mr. Kirk and Miss Sullivan, the prizes being a kewpie doll for Mr. Kirk and a pair 'of silver vases for his partner. An extra competition in ordinary waltzing was won liy Mr. Bennett and Miss McDonnell. The music provided by Mrs. Bianchi's orchestra was all that could be desired, and the supper arrangements were admirably carried out.

KING'S THEATRE. At the special matinee to-day the chief attraction will be ''On Our Selection," the . big Australian production, which will be shown tit the usual prices. There will be a complete change at the evening screening, when "Under Crimson Skies" will be filmed starring Elmo Lincoln. This Universal production is claimed to be the greatest film story ever screened, and s> gvc.it it .:s attraction that those, who wish to secure a seat should book at once.

Emery Bros.' circun will appear at Stratford, to-night (Saturday) at 8 o'clock, tlie band commencing at 7.30.

There was an attendance of only about 30 ratepayers at the'public meeting held in the Town Hall to-night for the purpose of discussing the loan proposals, which are to be submitted to the ratepayers next Wednesday. The Mayor (Mr. J. Vv\. McMillan) 'presided, and explained the necessity for each of the items. A long discussion followed, during which it few of those present expressed their opposition to such a large loan being raised. Ac the conclusion of the meeting a resol ition in favor of the whole of the proposal* was carried without any dissentient voices.
