THE LABOR SUPPLY.
SECURING QUARRYMEN.
HARBOR BOARD'S ENQUIRIES. In reply to the New Plymouth Harbor Board s inquiry as to the possibility of obtaining quarrymen from England,' the u n n, Secr * l r.v for Immigration (Mr. HI) Thomson) has written as follows: the best course for the Board to take ■s as follows: Arrange for the appointment of an English representative and instruct him to advertise on your behalf. If ho words the advertisement to secure applications from discharged soldiers and refers the name* to the High Commissioner for New Zealand in London, the latter will give the applicants every assistance to obtain free passages tor themselves and dependants under the provision of the Imperial overseas settlement scheme. If, however, in addition to replies from ex-service men lie receives others from men not so circumstanced, but who have not attained the age of uO, he could cable out the number of persons affected (including wives and children) and you could nominate that number by cable for assisted passages through this department. "The above-mentioned plan has already been adopted 'by several iar«e trading concerns in this Dominion, and is the only one, as far as I can see, which would ensure your obtaining anything like the desired amount of labor." The above letter was read at yesterday's meeting of the Board, and it was decided to thank the Department for the information.
