PERSONAL.

Mr. W. Rathbonc, recently of the Bank of New Zealand, Opunake, has been transferred to the head office at Wellington. Mr. J. W. A. Marchant, one time Surveyor-'General, is lying seriously ill at a Wellington hospital. Judge Walter Rawson, of the Native Land Court, has been appointed native trustee, which office was created under the Native Trustee Act passed last session.

At the meeting of the Taranaki Land Board on Thursday a resolution was passed sympathising with the widow mid family of> the late Mr. Hickman F. Eussell, who had been associated with the Board for a number of years as a valuer.

A Christehurch Press message states that Sir Heaton Rhodes, Minister of Defence, met with a slight accident on Wednesday, which will incapacitate him for a few days. While walking over the hills at Otaahuna he slipped ami spvainked the muscles of his feet rather seriously. At present he is- compelled to use crutches, but is expected to be about in a few days.

The funeral of the late Mr. W. A. Collis took place yesterday afternoon, the cortege including a representative attendance of councillors and New Plymouth business men. The bearers were Messrs. J. V. Dingle, W. Ambury, T. Furlong, P. J. White, F. W. Okey, and ('. Carter. At the graveside at Te llenui cemetery the officiating ministers were Revs. J Napier Milne and Cannell. Mr. J. Faton, who has been manager of the New Plymouth 'branch of the New Zealand Insurance Company for the past ifl years, retires from the company's service at (he end of February next, his connection with the company having extended over a period of 33 years. Mr. LVton's new home will be at Hewiek, Auckland. During his stay in New Plymouth he has been prominent in business and social affairs, so that his departure will u« much regretted.
