Before commencing the business of the meeting of bowlers held last evening, Mr. J. D. Sole referred t'o the great loss the town had sustained by the death of Mi. W, A. Collis, and expressed heartfelt sympathy .on behalf of those present VitJi Mrs. Collis and family in their sad bereavement.

Miss A. Cocker, M.A., of New Plymouth, Hieeti appointed assistant mistress in charge of the junior department at the Wellington Girls' Cqllege. At the Central School break-lip ceremony yesterday, reference was made to the death of Mr. W. A. Collis, who was for many years prominently connected with the school and occupied the position of chairman of committee for some time. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was passed in silence, all present standing.

It is announced by Press Association message from Auckland that Mr. P W Burbidge, SVT.Sc. (N.Z.), B.A. (Cantab); had been appointed to the Chair of Physics at Auckland University College. Mr. Percy Burbidge, who is 26 years of age, is a native of Wellington, son of Mr. W. Burbidge. He has had a most distinguished academic career. Educated at Mount Cook school, he came first in tho primary school scholarship list, and went to Wellington College. Here' he distinguished himself Incoming first in the Dominion in' the Junior Scholarships examination. Front Wellington College he went to Victoria university College, where he graduated M.Sc. Winning the ISSI Exhibition Scholarship, he went to Cambridge in 1813, returning invalided through illhealth in ISIO. On recovering his hertlth lie-joined the .'i.'ird Reinforcements, and saw service in France. He was awarded a N.Z.E.F. Scholarship, and completed his studies at Cambridge, under Sir Ernest Rutherford, the distinguished scientist. During the absence of Professor Jfarsden at the' front, Mr Burliiilse noted as locum fenens at Victoria College, until he himself joined up.
