The Defence Department sale of surplus stores has in G'hrisTehurch, as in all other centres, proved a veritable ''eye-opener" in the way of quick sales and quick returns. The sales were open to the public for six days only, but during that time ,wit'h postal orders, it is estimated (says an exchange) that quite £20,000 worth of goods were sold in Christchureh alone.
Throughout the Morrinsville district the dairy factories are doing phenomenal business. The season is at the flush, and night and day shifts are being worked to cope with the wonderful supply of milk. Everywhere (writes a correspondent to the Auckland Herald) there is an air of prosperity in the farming community, and big returns and record cheques are the order of the day. Farmers who paid high prices for their land during the sharp rise in the price last season are doing as well as many who bought in years before ■ At the half-yearly meeting of the shareholders of t|ie Bank of New Zeahind last week, Mr William Watson, one of the directors, mentioned that to meet increased family expenses the board had authorised the payment of a bonus to the less highly-paid officers in the grades above the "scale", which applies to the junior members of the staff. It is understood that the bonus is 10 per eent. of the annual salary, and is being paid to all members of the staff whose salaries are between ■ £2BO and £OSO and also to those young married men who are still on the "scale", which ends at £270. The trap capsized, and. a child had a narrow escape from being killed. The trap was badly smashed. Motorists should be careful in future how they dispose of their useless tins.—Wanganui Herald.
"How's the Rnbi Scddon getting on?" [asked a member of tlic Wanganui Harbor Board the other night. ••It's a bit too early yet to eome to a definite conclusion, but so far as can be seen she is doing fairly well," replied the chairman. He went on to say that the dredge was meeting with a good deal of the difficulties met with by the Kaione—shallow water, and sunken timber choking the pipes. He did not know whether the latter difficulty could be got over. The handling of the heavy black sand was a puzzle to engineers. He remarked that if the Eubi Sedtlon Was not capable of dealing with'the sand, lie was afraid the Kaione would not be much better. He remarked that the smaller dredge was handicapped by being able to discharge her hoppers only by means of doors. This meant that when the bar was not workable the ship would either have to be tied up or else dump its spoil in the deep pothole off Castleeliff wharf, i
