FLAXMILLING INDUSTRY.
SUFFERING FROM 11..AVY FREIGHTS.
DEPUTATION TO MR. MASSEY,
By Telograph.—Press Association,
Wellington, Last Night. A deputation representing the New Zealand Flax-millers' Association waited on the Prime Minister this afternoon. Attention was drawn to the recent increases in railway freights on hemp amounting, the deputation claimed, to over 200 per cent upon the rates previously existing. The speakers said the Association !iad never objected to paying fair rates, but it looked as though the industry had been singled out for specially severe treatment, and consequently the flax industry would be detrimentally affected. The deputation asked the Prime Minister to go fully into the matter, with a view to providing some reduction in the present freght rates.
Replying, Mr. Massey said he would have the figures furnished by the Association carefully examined by the Department, and he assured the deputation that their representations would receive full consideration.
