The District Telegraph Engineer forwarded particulars of a proposal for a standard taxi stand telephone system, and asking that the matter be considered by the Council with a view of making the system universal. —Received. The Director-General' of Agriculture wrote stating that the cost of the meat inspection service of the Department had been mounting up lapidly of late, and the return from the fees showed a considerable deficit. The present scale of charges had been drawn up in 1900 and was obviously inade<|uate under existing conditions. The following new scale woud be put into operation at the beginning of 1921: Cattle (per head) 6d, calves (per head) Id, swine (per head) 2d, every twelve or fraction of twelve sheep or lambs, sd.—Held over. The C-isborne Borough Council forwarded a circular letter asking the Council to give support to a proposal that legislation be passed enabling local bodies to raise loans by means of previous bonds.—Held over.
The District Health Officer, Wanganui, wrote agreeing to allow one of the health inspectors to act as plumbing inspector for Stratford. The local health inspector was appointed to act.
COMMITTEE REPORTS. The Works Commitee reported as follows: Footpaths (Broadway North). —A petition requesting that these footpaths be asphaltefl "between Regan and Seyton Streets have been received. We recommend that consideration be held over until the loan poll is taken. Culvert under Railway line, Broadway North: The Railway Department advises it will not share the cost. •We recommend the Council to ask the Department to have the work done at the Council's expense. Estimated cost £26. Mr. A. C. Russ has resigned his position as borough foreman, and we recommend that the appointment of a foreman be held over till after the loan proposals have been submitted to the ratepayers. The report was adopted, and it was decided to give Mr. Russ five weeks' leave of absence on full pay; also a testimonial in recognition of his faithful services for, the past 14 years. The'' General Committee reported that the work of making additions to the abattoir yards and the tarring of the yard fences had been completed. The Electric Light Committee reported as follows: Electrical Engineer: Twenty-two applications have been received for the position, and we recommend that ihe names of five of,the applicants be submitted to Mr. F. Black, consulting engineer, for his advice. Petition from residents of East Road for light: We recommend that the petitioners be advised that the Council cannpfundertake the work.—Adopted. The acting borough engineer (Mr. E. R Holland*) reported fully on the work carried cut during the month. The report stated, alia, that tar sealing and sanding of Broadway North from Seyton Street to Flint B.oad had now been completed; also that fences had been erected at both ends of the suspension bridge.—Received. The electrical engineer (Mr. E. F. Hollands) reported that the new high tension transmission line along Orlanda Street north is practically completed. This will give better distribution, and the consumers in that district will have a much better ligHt. Several sections have been overhauled and several insulators removed. A new. high tension line has been run from the hydro station, approximately eleven chain. On Sunday, November 7, the old poles and lines were removed as they had become dangerous. Four new service connections were made to the Council's mains during the month. Units generated were as follows: Hydro station 17,103, Diesel 4547; total, 21,050, being a decrease of MB4 units from last month. A complete return of the connected load has been compiled, and up to November 30 was as follows: Lighting 400 k.w., electric irons 162 k.w., kettles 20 k.w., radiators 150 k.w., toasters 9 k.w., motors 120 k.w., other equipment 15 k.w., total connected, load S7<s k.w.—Received.
C'r. Cameron wag appointed to represent tlie Council at the next meeting of the Taranajci Counties' Conference.
The cemetery caretaker reported having received donations of plants from the Stratford Bowling Club and the caretaker of the New Plymouth cemetery.
Votes of thanks were accorded" to Messrs. Newton King, Ltd., for the use of three motor cars on the occasion of the visit of the flovernor-Oeneral and Lady Jellicoe, also to the Mayor, Mayoress and town clerk for the manner in which they carried out the reception arrangements.
GENERAL The new X-ray plant for the Stratford H'wnital arrived in Stratford today. The room at the hospital is ready for its reception, and arrangements are being made for the installation of the plant without delay. A public meeting of ratepayers will be held in the Town Hall on Friday evening at 8 o'clock to discuss the loan proposals.
The choir of the Methodist Church visited the hospital yesterday and rendered a much appreciated selection of concerted items and solos, Mr. C. H. Lawn giving a piano solo. At. the conclusion of the programme, Mr, C. H. Lawn, chairman of the Hospital Board, thanked the choir for visiting the hospital and entertaining the patients.
An announcement that Mr. T. A. \V. Nicholson has disposed of his chemist and photo goods business to Mr. J. F. Young, late of Melbourne, appears in this issue.
