CLEANING UP THE TOWN.

Yesterday was the annual clean-up day, under the direction of the. New Plymouth Borough Council, and the endeavors made by householders to have a general clearance of rubbish resulted in a larger quantity of refuse being removed than in any previous vear except the first.

The institution of this movement in New Plymouth dates back four years, and the experience gained annually is helpful /,i the organisation of the work. Yesterday four motor lorries and six expresses were engaged all day in the collection of refuse, and the task was ■. practically completed at seven, only J about 20 loads in the outskirts awaitj ing clearance,-and these will be removed to-day.

The refuse made up 100 loads, and comprised a very wide assortment of discarded materials, in which petrol tins were prominent. Inspector Day remarked yesterday that quite a number of householders gathered for clearance materials which could have been burnt, such as motor tyres, and care in this matter would perhaps greatly reduce the accumulation in the future. Among yesterday's collection was an ancient hand-sewing machine of almost the first pattern in use, and the date of its manufacture is said to be about 1680. It may be that the relic will be secured for preservation in the museum.
