BOROUGH COUNCIL,

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

Waitara, Dec. 11. The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last Wednesday. Present: His Worship the Mayor and Crs, Blair, Rennie, Jaggs, K. Jones and A. W. Ogle. Apologies were received froin-Crs. Johnston and Gribbon. Air. W. T.. Jennings, M.P., wrote in regard to river erosion, that the Government subsidised local bodies on a £ for £ basis. He further wrote that th> resident engineer had been instructed to visit Waitara and make a report on the serious erosion that is taking place by the river at Waitara. Messrs. Lund and Sampson complained of the amount of sanitation service and charges. The Clerk said he handed the complaint to the overseer, and the matter, he thought, had been satisfactorily settled , Messrs. Lund and Sampson, on behalf of Mr. A. Graham, wrote asking that a fence erected on the road in proximity to his property be removed. This application was supported by other property owners.—Resolved to request the erectee to remove same. i

The librarian (Mrs. Wyllie), who has been in that position for eight months, wrote asking for an increase in salary. The matter was considered in committee, and on resuming it was reported that an increase had been made from £52 to £GO per annum. \

The secretary of the Football Club wrote asking that the £3O promised by the Council towards the approach to the Camp Reserve be now granted. He pointed out that the money collected bv public subscriptions had now been absorbed, and the road required to be finished oil' by the foreman prigr to being cindered, ft was resolved thai: the Domain Board pass the amount for that purpose.

The borough foreman reported that the bridge was getting into a dilapidated state through want of paint, and that the iron work wanted chipping and scaling.—To be gone into early in the new vear.

The electrical engineer, in his monthly report, recommended that meters and accounts be read and collected every second month instead of monthly, thus saving eighteen days per year, which could be more profitably used on other work.—Adopted. The Bowling Club asked that four trees be cut down close to their green, as the trees prevented the sun from getting to the green. It was resolved that tenders be called for cutting and removing also for the borough i carting for the coming year. I Mr. W. J. The Mayor brought up the matter of Christmas holidays for the staff, and it was resolved that three days be observed at Christmas and two at New V'ear, whilst the office will be closed from the evening of December 24 to January 8, 1921,

GENERAL.

The_ quarterly meeting of the Waitomo Licensing Committee was held in the Court House, Waitara, on Wcdnes : day last. Pfjsent: Messrs. Walter, JF. Jenkins, R. Gribbon, R. H. Pigott and J. M. Seymour. A transfer of the license of the Waitara Hotel from Spencer Ridgley to F. Locke wafi granted. W. J". Clare, who recently .sold his farm at Motpnui, and is now farming on the Hauraki Plains, is very pleAsed with his new surroundings and prospects. He reckons the land will carry one beaut to the acre, and that there is nothing better in the North Island.

A social held in the Tikorangi Hall on Thursday evening proved most enjoyable, the takings and donations amounting to £6 os, to be devoted to the stall for the Tikorangi church bazaar. The onerous duties of M.C. were in the capable bands of Messrs. R. Jury and I. Vickery. 'Jongs were given by Misses Foster and Work, and Mr. Hack fey, while a trio war. .nicely given by Misses A. Knuckey, 0. 'iV'ills and M. Sarten. Mr. W. Cole ofTi.-iited at the piano.
