A London cable states that Sir Ronald Crawford Monroe_ Ferguson, late of tEe Commonwealth, becomes Viscount Novar, of Raith.
A New York wire states that Signor Caruso, the great tenor, while singing "Elisir d'Amour", broke a blood-vessel in the throat. It is feared he may never sing again.
A Capetown cable reports the death of Mrs. Olive Schreiner, the authoresß. Amongst her best known publications are: "The Story of an African Faring "Dream Life and Real Life", "Trooper Peter Halket of Mashonaland".
At Hawera on Friday evening Mr. W. V. Patterson, president of the local branch of the R.S.A., who was recently married, was presented by the returned soldiers with a clock as a token of appreciation of his services on their behalf. "The papers in London are beginning to talk about the marriage of the Prince of Wales," writes a London correspondent. "It is already everywhere taken for granted t'liat he will marry somebody of English descent. The last English King to do this was, of course, Henry VIII., who not only did it, but did it frequently; but it is as Well to remem-, her that the mother of Queen Elizabeth was an Englishwoman, and that an experiment so highly successful might be repeated." 'Members of the Lady Teachers' Association foregathered at Messrs. May and Arrowsmith's on Saturday afternoon for the. purpose of farewelling Miss Laird, president of the Association. Mrs. Martin presided and, after a dainty afternoon tea had been partaken of, in a neat speech presented Miss Laird with a purse of sovereigns! Misses Mynott, Papps and Andrews also spoke expressing regret at Miss Laird's resignation. Miss Laird feelingly responded. The musical programme included a pianoforte solo by Miss Leech, and songs by Mrs. Wilkes and Miss Blew man.
