BRAVERY ACKNOWLEDGED.
PRESENTATION OF MEDALS. In recognition of effecting a rescue from drowning at Fitzroy in March of 1918 the Misses D. and P. Brown, then pupils at the New Plymouth High School, were awarded the Royal Humane Society's 'Medal. The circum* stances were that one afternoon a number of girls from the school were b*th« ing on the beach, when two got into difficulties in the surf. Prompt action on the part of the Misses Brown feiulted in the rescue of their two connades, assistance with the reel also being dered by some of the other girla who lad > knowledge of life-saving. At the breaking-up ceremony in con' nection with the Girls' High School last evening, Miss D. Brown was the recipient of the medals, on behalf of herself and and sister, the presentation being Bade' by the Mayor (Mr. ]?. E. Wilwn), who referred to the plucky nature of than girls' act. He pointed out thai the medals were only awarded by the Society for the saving of life at pertonal xisk, and the Society made careful investigation into the facts of a case before acting, so that the m,edal was oL« high value, and could not be earned easily. Miss Brown was accorded an ovation, and cheers were given for the two titters.
