NURSES' DAY.
SATURDAY'S PUBLIC APPEAL. £2OO WANTED. To lighten the burdens of the hospital nurses—that splendid body of women whose daily task is the care and comfort of their fellows—is something which should immediately appeal to everyone, and an opportunity to do this will come in New Plymouth on Saturday, which will bo Nurses' Day, and -the nurses of the New Plymouth public hospital will appeal for' £2OO to improve the conveniences of the new nurses' home. In that spirit of sacrifice which h a notable characteristic of the hospital nurse these women have frequently, after hours of hard work, given up their leisure to assist a canvass for some worthy object, but on Saturday they will, for the first time, make a pwsonal appeal, and it behoves everyone to cmploy this opportunity to "express his thanks in a tangible manner. Various circumstances help to bring about the necessity for this appeal, but, briefly, the burden which the new ntfrses' home is on the; Hospital Board's finances venders it necessary to use the pruning knife where there are. luxuries, and one of the items which has become a victim of the economy campaign is the /tiling of floors. Now, the tiles may appear to be a luxury which can easily be dispensed with, but without allowing this point to cloud the issue, as it were, the fact remains that tiles will save a great amount of labor, they will make the nurse's lot a little less difficult than it already is, they wi]l make the strain on her Health less severe, and they will ass'it to produce a brighter and happier home.
Alt this goes to show that it is very necessary that tiles should be provided if the cost is not unreasonable. All that the board-asks the nurses to do is to collect £2OO, and when this h done the tiles" will .be provided. It is to raise this £2OO that the nurses will canvass New Plymouth on Saturday. There will be 'Devon Street, where useful articles may be purchased, and other means will be employed to test the generosity of the public. The tiles will save domestic labor, and it must be -remembered that it is in timeß of stress and epidemics that the greaffst oalls are made on nursing staffs, calls which are met cheerfully to the limit of physical enduranae, and at such times it is that the nurses are most often without adequate domestic assistance. Then will be the time when the provision of tiles will be of great material assistance to them.
