RUSSIA'S SUFFERINGS.
THE ONLY REMEDY. V : By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Dec. 5. Mr. Churchill, in an article in the Sunday Express, replying to Mr. H. G. Wells' impressions of Russia, especially. the statement that the blockade, not communism, starved Russia, says she is one of the great granaries of the world. One might as well blockade Newcastle against imports of coal as Russia against imports of wheat. The only remedy for Russia's ills is the abandonment of Communism. „ Mr. Churchill asks: "Can cancer repent or disease transform itself into health? It would be a miracle, but the road is still open. Let the Bolsheviks show mercy and they will obtain peace; let theja liberate the energies of the people and they will obtain food; Jet them observe faith in internal and external relations and commerce will revive." ' HelsingfoM, Dec. 4. The effects of Russia's sufferings are indicated by the preliminary census returns, which show the population to have decreased 10 per cent, owing to the fall in the birthrate and the increased mortality, especially from typhus. The population of Moscow has decreased 45 per cent, and that of Petrograd 71 per cent. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
