THE CHRISTMAS FAIR.
OVER £7OO RAISED. The Christmas Pair, which was conducted in furtherance of tie efforts on behalf of the Olarke Memorial Hostel ~ Fund, concluded on Saturd»y. The total takings will be slightly over £7OO. As there are yet a few small. sums to come in, which it is expected Will cover expenses, it is hoped to have £7OO clear to hand over to the fund. As is indicated by the splendid results achieved, the function Wa« well patronised on Saturday, A produce stall conducted by the\ ladies of Hillsborough and Bell Block did a brisk trade, and the sales in the other de< partments were again good. A feature of the concluding night was the Christmas tree arranged for the benefit of the children, and Fattier Xnws made a special visit ■fo supervise tho distribution of the gifts, the young folks having an enjoyable time. ■ Towards the close, Mr. T. C. List, on behalf of the men's advisory board in connection with the hostel movement, thanked the public for the patronage and support accorded the Pair during the three days it had been held. He mentioned that the Fair had been or- ~ ganised by Mrs. H, Baily, who had been working and planning for over nine months, being backed up loyally by a band of willing ladies, as -well as by Mr. Baily. They had set out to raise £2OOO, and when Mr. Clarke died and it was decided to make ytt hoatel a memorial to him, this sum *SM increased to £3OOO. He was pleated to inform them that thanks to the ladles and the liberality of the citizens £SOOO was now in sight, and thero was no' doubt but that the ladies would raise the remainder in a few months. He congratulated them all.on the splendid work they had done and the capital results achieved, and, at his instance, «h»» hearty cheers were given- for Mrs. Baily and her lady helpers. '. ' • Two ladies deserve special mention lor good work done during the Fair. Tier . are Mrs. Arthur Avery and Miss Godfrey, who each day provided refresh- - ments for the stall-holders. The refreshments were daintily served and the arrangements were as compjete as they were successful. During Saturday evening a stallholder lost a stiver purse, valued' as a keepsake. A reward is offered- for its recovery.
