VESSEL BREAKS DOWN.

The steamer Garbeta, which arrived at Wellington thiij, morning 'from Newcastle with 7100 tons of coal, *l» delayed considerably on the trip owing to the engines'breaking down. The Garbeta left Newcastle at 8.30 p.m. on November 25, and experienced line and clear weather until 8 |,m. on the 27th, when a thick fog •was encountered. This cleared;, at 4 tho following morning, and at 7.30 o'clock the samo morning the engines broke down, the low pressure cylinders collapsing entirely, and, t. the Garbeto was 'brought to a standstill. The engineers, at once commenced repair work, and at 7.5(5 p.m. a compound had been effected. Thil enabled the vessel to proceed at five knots per hour, and later the speed was increased to seven knots. Pine weather Wa« experienced until arrival in port this morning.
