FOUR MILES FALL TO EARTH.

New York, October 4. Extraordinary coolness and presence of mind in a parachute drop of 20,fl00f; saved the life of Lieut;. A. G. Hamilton yesterday, when within a few yards of the ground. Lieut. Hamilton belongs to the Army Air' Service, and his thrilling fall, which is said to break all records of the kind, was made at Aneadia, Florida. His decent of nearly four miles wis made in 12 minutes. He had dropped 2000 feet before his giant paracnute opened, and then to his horror he discovered that the springs which were supposed to close the air vent at the top had failed to work. As he approached the earth and sur: veyed the situation, he saw that he would land in a wood. There was one chance in a hundred of breaking his fall, and he took it. Climbing up the rigging, he reached out, pulled an edge of the parachute downward, and waited for death. Through the tilting of the parachute, a rope caught on the brandies of a tree. Then Lieut. Hamilton, thanking his lucky stars, slid to earth in safety.
