Mr. Cyril Grigg, a telegraphist employed in tile Stratford post office, met with a painful accident on Saturday evening. He was closing the door of the strong room and the thumb of bis right hand became caught and was badly smashed. He was attended by Dr. Steven, who found it necessary to put four stitches in the thumb, and yesterday an X-ray photograph was taken of it by Mr. C. Ward, manager of the King's Cinema Theatre, who is th,v owner of a' splendid plant. The photograph shows that the bone has been badly smashed, being joined by only a thread. Dr. Steven, however, does not consider it will be necessary to amputate the thumb.
The Stratford Borough Council had [ the misfortune to lose a valuable horse !yesterday. '<"■<>. horse was found dead at the fe.:i. of a steep bank, and appeared to nive fallen over the bank during a stampede amongst the horses in the night. There is not a- great deal of building activity apparent in .Stratford at the present time. Only eight houses are in I course of erection, and the number of permits is?ued recently does not indicate any likelihood of a boom in the near future. The shortage of materials, principally cement, is the rtason why several bnrincss premises, for which permits wsre i.«ued by the Borough Council months a'.:o, are not being gone on with. Cr. J. O'Neill, who was severely injured while or. his way to attend the meeting of tie Stratford County Council on November 20, is now reported to be making w.tisfr.ctory progress. The. death occurred suddenly from pneumonia of Mr. George Fawcett, a well-known local carrier, at the age of 50 yearc. The late Mr. Fawcett ' war. horn in Lincolnshire and arrived in New Plymouth at the age of seven yosrf. He came to Stratford shout 22 years ago as stoTeman for Mr. Newton Kin;?, and for the last ten yw>rs was in business as a carrier. He leaves a widow and eight children. A tender for the work of erecting the girls' shelter shed at the Stratford school has been .let to Mr. Joseph Hale, of Hawera.
