Iho second trial of Samuel John iliorn on a charge of having murdered bydney Seymour Eyre, farmer, who was shot dead in bed at Pukekawa on the "ight of August 24, began 'at the Auckland Supremo Court to-day before, Mr. Justice Chapman. The first trial, which occupied five days from Monday, November 15, and was held hefore the thief Justice (Sir Robert Stout), resulting in the jury failing to agree. A jury panel numbering 120 attended Court this mommg, and the selection of 'twelve good men and true" occupied about 40 minutes. Altogether fi' nam«s were called.' Forty-two jurymen were instructed by the Crown to j 'stand aside," six others were excused from attendance, mainly on radical grounds, and two, who applied for re. lease but were refused bv the Judge were challenged on behalf of ■ the pnsoner. The Crown case was in 'he hands of Mr. J. C Martin, and Mr. 1! P. Hunt, and the defence was conducted by Mr. R. A. Singer, Mr. 0. E. Stout and Mr. W. J. Oatcnby, while Mr F. W. McLiver watched proceedings on behalf of Mrs. Eyre. An address bv Mr. Martin and evidence of Mrs. Frre on the lines of that given at the previous trial occupied Iho Cciut throughout the day.
