OUTLOOK FOR PRODUCE.
At the meeting of representative.? of the N.Z. freezing companies, which' was held in Wellington last Wednesday, Mr. Massey was able to inform the delegates that at the end of the year there would be very little meat held in store in the Dominion, and that, so fur as he could judge, there would be no difficulty about getting space, for "free" meat. The main question that is causing concern to those connected with the frozen meat industry is whether the Imperial Government will remove their control of imported frozen meat. The Prime Minister assured those present at the conference that the Dominion Government would do all in its power to secure a free market for New Zealand meat. It is possible the producers in the Dominion do not fully realise that the Imperial authorities have other interests to consider besides those of the overseas growers, more particularly the producers in Britain, who are contributing their full share to the heavy burden of taxation there, and wiio have to be protected from a lowering of prices much in the same way as .Yew Zealand wheat growers arc protected here. Certainly, a free market in Britain would be a step in the right direction so far as the overseas producers and the British public are concerned, but convincing reasons possibly exist why it may be unsound policy on the part of the Imperial authorities to administer the affairs of the country in the interests of Dominion producers rather than of the British. If positions were reversed, what would the people of the Dominion say if the British Government attempted to dictate the internal policy of New Zealand?
